The language is not supported on the server – Office SharePoint Server2007 installation

15 05 2006

If you receive this error during the installation of Office SharePoint Server 2007:

“The language is not supported on the server”

It means that you have uninstalled a previous version (or the same version) of Office SharePoint Server on the server, and it has taken the ServerLanguage reg value with it!

In order to fix the problem, you need to restore the ServerLanguage registry value by creating the following .reg file (open notepad and paste the following):

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Web Server Extensions\12.0\ServerLanguage]
“1033″=”"

Save this as fixlanguage.reg and upload it to your server. Double click the file and say yes to the prompts.

Rerun your SPT configuration wizard, and you will no longer see the error.

I’m expiriencing something like this, but in HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Web Server Extensions\12.0\WSS ther is nothing in entered in key ServerType, and when I start Sharepoint Products and Technologies Configuration Wizard, it says to try using Add/Remove and then repair, but that doesn’t help. Could you tell me what it says in your registry entry?

Hi matthew,

I have another problem due to the same circumstances : installing after desinstalling sharepoint 2007 beta 2. Only thing is my server is on ‘French language’.
I’m getting this error with the configuration wizard :

An exception of type System.IO.DirectoryNotFoundException was thrown. Additional exception information: Could not find a part of the path ‘C:\Program Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\12\Template\1033\xml\AlertTemplates.xml’

I tried changing the ‘1036′ to ‘1033′ in the path name above.
Then I got the famous ‘Language not supported’ error. Tried you fix, but still getting the same error. :(
Any clues on this one?
How I wish I was as lucky as these guys..already spent half a day on this one.
Thanks for your help!

Hi Everyone,

I am trying to upgrade my intranet based on WSS V2.0 to WSSv3.0 (Beta 2). Just to give a full picture, my current version 2 runs on the top of sql server 2000 (not mSDE) as multi-virtual-server farm

-Does anyone by the way know how soon the complete WSS3.0 will be released?-

1/I Opted for “in-place” upgrade on a test server and I have backups for my production site. Plus, I do not have any customized webparts nor templates, so I dont have to worry about this at least for now :)

2/ At the very beginning of the upgrade setup, The” Server Type”tab gives you the option to select either
•Web Front End if you are running upgrade on a server farm.

or •Stand-alone if this is a standalone server (not part of a server farm), and you want to use Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Embedded Edition (Windows) for your database.
I chose “Web Front End” because of I dont wanna run on the top of Microsoft SQL Server 2005. I do believe that s the right choice, especially after reading some MS guides

3/The Prescan was succeful. When I run “the SharePoint Products and Technologies Configuration Wizard”, it always gives an error at Step 2: “Creating the configuration database”. The text of the error is:

” Configuration Failed.

One or more configuration setting failed. Completed configuration settings will not be rolled back. Resolve the problem and run this configuration wizard again. The following contains detailed information about the failure:

Failure to initiliase Microsoft products and technologies upgrade

An exception of type Microsoft.SharePoint.SPException was thrown. Additional exception information:
Service SPtimer was not found on computer ‘.’

to diagnose the problem, review the application event log and the configuration log file located at: C:\ProgramFiles\CommonFiles\Microsoft Share\Web Server
Extensions\12\LOGS\PSCDiagnostics_5_27_2 006_21_30_5_171_1721520950.log

4/When I click on the above path to Open the log file, this is the text of the exception:

Exception: System.InvalidOperationException: Service SPTimer was not found on computer ‘.’. —> System.ComponentModel.Win32Exception: The specified service does not exist as an installed service

Please help. It s very Urgent. Thanks a lot in advance

Best Regards

Walid

Hi all,

I would recommend upgrading to Beta2 Technical Refresh and let me know if this solves your issues, if not, I will log these as bugs under the beta program.

I’ve tried to customize the alert messsage text, by modifying the subject line and added text like ‘SiteName Modified by Me’ to the subject line and saved the alerttemplates.xml and restarted the server aswell as restarted IIS – still my changes don’t show up. Any ideas please?

Just wanted to update that after updating alerttemplates.xml, we had to run stsadmn command to permeate the changes – only IISRESET OR Physical restart of the server didn’t do it.

Cheers

i have one pc with win2k3 r2
installed AD IIS then steps for wss3 Beta2 TR
when running config wizard i Keep getting configuration failed . can’t create sample data.
and stuff about sqlclient etc

ignored it..went to central admin..tried extending..re-run config wizard..selected overwrite..then Task 8 went ok but i got config FAILED again due to sptimer

now: is it true i must have a separate pc for AD Domain and another for WSS

after trying numerous times doing evreything that was written in all the blogs and newsgroups and doing numerous reinstalltions of the sharepoint services I found the solution. as a last resort I deleted the “C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\12″ and then I was able to smoothly install the service.
hopes this helps

Thanks a lot. After 5 hours of extensive search, I got the solution.
In my case, I have to add one more key as ‘version’.
I updated your solution as
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Web Server Extensions\12.0\ServerLanguage]
“1033″=”"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Web Server Extensions\12.0]
“Version”=”12.0.0.4017″

Your solution was really very helpful :)

Hi All,
I am trying to customize the alert notifications for a task list. I got to remove the “Description” field content and the “Title” field content from the email notifications that is being sent when a task is changed or assigned to somebody. I did the following steps for accomplishing the same:

1. I took a copy of the alerttemplates.xml and copied c:\temp folder in the server.

2. I added the field name “Description” in both the tags “ImmediateNotificationExcludedFields” and “DigestNotificationExcludedFields” under the SPAlertTemplateType.Tasks.

##Properties##
##ImmediateNotificationExcludedFields##ID;Author;Title;Description;Editor;Modified_x0020_By;Created_x0020_By;_UIVersionString;ContentType;TaskGroup;IsCurrent;Attachments;NumComments;##/ImmediateNotificationExcludedFields##
##DigestNotificationExcludedFields##ID;Author;Title;Description;Editor;Modified_x0020_By;Created_x0020_By;_UIVersionString;ContentType;TaskGroup;IsCurrent;Attachments;NumComments;##/DigestNotificationExcludedFields##
##/Properties##
(Please consider ## as a tag)
3. I did the above changes, saved the file, did an IISRESET and ran the command updatealerttemplates command using STSADM.exe.

4. I changed an item in a task and saved it.

5. The email that I received was not having the title in it, but the content in the “Description” field is still appearing and I need to exclude the same from the email notifications.

I tried this quite a number of times, but no luck. I am still seeing the Description field content in the email notifications that I receive.

I searched for all the possible options but could not get any beak through in this. If possible, I would like to help me out with this and also let me know, if there is any constraints in implementing this. Thanks in advance.

Regards,
Srinivas.
